Public Environmental Awareness and Education
Wednesday, January 11th, 2012With the increasing scientific inventions and modern technologies, the need for public environmental awareness and education is continually increasing. The modern technologies have brought too much convenience for us. But on the same time, they are posing major threats to the environment which is leading to many other major problems. The resources have started depleting in many parts of the world. Global warming is posing threats and the need for green environment is gaining highest priority.
There should be a proper framework to educate the public about environment and to spread environmental awareness. In today’s modern world, when the world has become global village, there are many sources through which awareness can be created such as media, campaigns, and making the environmental awareness a compulsory part of education.
Although, taking direct steps to improve the environment is good strategy but the better strategy will be to educate public. When public is environmentally educated then the environment will get better with individual efforts of everybody. There will be no more need of taking large scale actions to improve the environment. Aware and educated public indeed is a big asset that can quickly improve the environment.
One of the main initiatives that can be taken to environmentally educate people is by making the environmental education a compulsory form of syllabus. This should be done especially in schools so that we get aware future citizens. We can even take this approach for high school and university students. Similarly, seminars, trainings and workshops on environmental issues can contribute largely in spreading environmental awareness and to realize people about the importance of environmental issues.
Media is a very important resource that can help largely in spreading the environmental awareness. Any form of media, whether it is print, broadcast or internet, can spread the message within seconds. In today’s modern world, where almost everybody has access to internet, it can be cheap and effective source of running environmentally focused campaigns, seminars, podcasts, and webinars, etc. With the joint efforts of government and media, public can be better educated to adapt environment friendly life style.
Talking about print media, journalists can play an active role in educating people. Through their researched and valuable content, they can involve public in promoting environmental awareness. Brochures and flyers containing environment friendly lifestyle tips can very well educate the people about environmental issues and how to avoid adverse effects of pollution and other environment harming materials.
Another effective strategy for spreading environmental awareness is educating opinion leaders. People tend to follow their opinion leaders. A leader or celebrity endorsed message is far more effective than an ordinary message. Remember to convey the message in language and terms that people understand. Requirements may vary from region to region. Formulate your message in local language. Use easy-to-understand terms so that people can easily understand the message.
State or government is also responsible to contribute in environmental awareness and education. They should set aside a proper budget to fund programs aimed for greener environment. Using all these resources, we can create environmental awareness and can hope greener and better tomorrow.
